Ute Tradie Expectations

The main issue I’ve identified is tradies not having a secure storage space for their tools on the ute. Many of the guys have had their gear stolen and this poses a huge issue for being able to get jobs done. I understand that the guys have preferences as to what tools they use, and I will always respect their decision, but when they use their own tools I expect them to have the tools stored in a safe place.

I do offer an option for the construction workers to collect what they need from the office workshop, but many of them simply prefer using their own stuff. This means that a lot of them store their tools at home. Unfortunately, there have been incidents when a tradie has had their ute parked at their home, only to have it broken into overnight and the tools stolen. The next morning I am then met with frantic calls from them as they try to figure out how they’re going to do their job for that day.

I hate to enforce mandates, but I’ve implemented an expectation for ute canopies. Around Melbourne, it isn’t exactly notorious for theft, but there’s always going to be someone unsavoury around. The expectation is that all tradies are to have a ute canopy installed if they’re using their own gear and the gear is staying in the ute at their property overnight. If they cannot meet this expectation, they are to use the gear from the workshop and return it after their shift. Many of the boys felt quite frustrated that I was suddenly enforcing this rule, but soon they will see that I’m simply protecting them and their tools from theft. I’m essentially saving them money.

There are many benefits of installing 4×4 aluminium canopies, but the greatest benefit is the safety and security they provide. I’ve personally also been a big advocate for aluminium canopies as they also help to protect the tools against wet weather conditions. If you want your tools to wear out faster, leaving them in the rain will do it.
